If you tell someone relatively new to internet marketing that “the money is in the list”, often they will say “oh you make money out of spamming”?
You see, although a lot of people get regular emails from companies, these are usually from big companies. For instance, I get emails from airlines, electronic shops and other sites where I have bought physical goods in the past.
So when you mention that you make money from emails, because you aren’t a big company then they assume that you are making money from SPAM or something similar.
It’s also because a lot of people don’t sign up to lists with their email address. Although we can get people to sign up to our list, a lot of people don’t actually sign up to any lists because they don’t want to give away their email addresses.
So What Is The Difference Between SPAM and A List?

On the other hand, when you build a list, then the person has actually voluntarily given their email address. Sometimes, people will abuse these sign up forms and actually sign up their enemies in the hope that they get a ton of unsolicited emails. To guard against this, most marketers will use what is called a “double opt-in” feature.
This means that the person must click on a confirmation link in their Inbox shortly after signing up. Only after they have confirmed their subscription, will they start to be sent emails.
By using a double opt-in method, your list will comply with the US CAN-SPAM act.
In fact, you can even use a single opt-in and sometimes make more money this way although you will be subject to potentially more SPAM complaints. Some autoresponder providers like AWeber, will only allow you to use double opt-in as they don’t wish to be associated with single opt-in and it’s problems.
