The benefit for you is that you get to place your own link in the resource box underneath the article. Thus you get traffic coming from the article to your website.

Why Run Your Own Directory?

The owner of the article directory is allowed to put his own ads next to the article. If you have an article directory of several thousand articles then you can make a nice recurring income from people who click your ads.

What Kind Of Traffic Do You Get?

Most of your traffic is from the search engines. This is highly targetted traffic that is likely to click your ads. Many articles are of low quality. However, this is quite good for the site owner because it means that people get bored of the article and can get away quickly by clicking your own ads!

Maintenance Of An Article Directory

Unfortunately, running a directory does require some active maintenance. The site is your own and you are responsible for the content so usually you will be approving the articles yourself after they have been submitted but before they can be published. Even if you only skim the articles to make sure that they are compliant, this can take up valuable time and is quite boring. When article submissions are high in volume then you’ll find that this really eats badly into your time allocated for other activities.

Is There A Better Way?

I would advise against running a general article directory. You’ll find that you simply get too many submissions to process. I had this problem once and let a lot of people down who wanted articles approved because I was overwhelmed by the demand.

A better way is to create a niche article directory. For instance, a directory just for forex trading or dog training. This way you will get highly targetted articles around a niche but also at a more manageable volume.
